The Beyinba Kollection

“Male Child” in Akan - my firstborn collection, a personal creation story.

When I moved from the Western Region to Accra, I carried only two Ghana-must-go bags and my sewing machines. For months, those bags held my entire life. Their colors and woven checks became the first visual references that shaped my idea of fabric and pattern. Growing up among the Akans, speaking and writing in Fante, and living within a communal culture, I wanted my debut collection to gather these fragments - migration, language, memory, and resourcefulness - and translate them into clothing.

CULTURAL REFERENCES
Ghana-must-go bags: long associated with migration, particularly the Ghana-Nigeria tensions of the 1980s. For me, they embodied both departure and survival.
1980s Ghana: remembered for its resourcefulness and strong communal bonds.
Makola Market (editorial setting): chosen for its atmosphere of trade, connection, and collective energy.

DESIGN NOTES
Fabric: Patterns and palettes reinterpreted from the Ghana-must-go motif.
Silhouettes: Inspired by 1980s tailoring and street style, adapted for a contemporary lens.
Mood: A narrative of beginnings - shaped by movement, limitation, and the promise of possibility.
